Degenerative Myelopathy in Finnish Lapphunds (updated 3 July 2017)

ViestiKirjoittaja Petra Palukka » 24.02.2017 17:44

The Finnish Lapphund Breeding Committee of the Lapphund Club of Finland is currently aware of two Finnish Lapphunds (aged 9 and 11) tested "At risk" for Degenerative Myelopathy and exhibiting clinical symptoms. Based on the DM gene test results currently available both in and outside of Finland, approximately one fourth of the population are carriers of DM while 1-2% are At risk. Not all dogs tested At risk necessarily develop clinic symptoms, which suggests either incomplete penetrance, or the dogs do not live old enough to develop symptoms. Only time will tell how large a share of the dogs tested At risk actually are affected once the dogs get older and eventually die. A diagnosis solely based on clinical symptoms is uncertain and can only be confirmed pathologically, which is why the Breeding Committee strongly encourages the owners of any dogs tested At risk having them autopsied so that we get reliable information on DM in this breed. The Lapphund Club of Finland reimburses the autopsy fees of such (Finland-based) dogs provided that the gene test results and autopsy reports are sent to the Breeding Committee.

Furthermore, the Breeding Committee encourages owners of Finnish Lapphunds to have their dogs gene tested for DM so that we gain a better understanding of the proportions of carriers in the population. At this point the Breeding Committee's recommendations for how to breed carriers and dogs At risk are the following:

- No carrier-to-carrier breedings.
- A carrier can be bred to an untested dog, however, testing is always encouraged, especially if there are known carriers among the close relatives of the untested dog.
- A dog At risk always has to be bred to a clear one, and should not be bred from extensively (because the percentage of carriers in the breed is high as it is).

The Breeding Committee maintains a list of DM gene test results on this page: http://www.lappalaiskoirat.fi/english/? ... tested_slk
If you spot carriers or dogs At risk that are related to your breeding stock on the list, please consider having your dogs tested. The test is available through Laboklin, Movet and Optigen to name a few.

The Finnish Lapphund Breeding Committee has now received the first report for an autopsy performed on a Finnish Lapphund with a clinical and genetic DM diagnosis. The autopsy findings confirm that the clinical diagnosis was correct. Pathologically confirmed cases of DM will be marked "Sairas (ruumiinavaus)" on the DM gene test result list.

The Breeding Committee has received another autopsy report for a Finnish Lapphund with a clinical and genetic DM diagnosis. Also this time the autopsy findings confirm that the clinical diagnosis was correct.
